Getting Lippy with the NYX 2017 Beauty Advent

Beauty Advent Calendars seem to be ever on the increase in popularity over the last few years especially, since many can be rather pricey, in fact most are, I feel it’s a really helpful thing to seek out reviews on, in order to hunt out a bargain or simply to avoid disappointment. NYX (a brand I’ve yet to sample) are currently selling theirs for half of the retail price (were £50, now £25) and so I felt it were the perfect opportunity to see what all the hype is about!

Due to this calendar being filled solely with lip products I thought I’d leave individual reviews for another time, as and when requested, I will however be focusing more on the calendar itself in the simple form of pros and cons! I hope that my insights will prove to be somewhat helpful, either now, or as Christmas approaches once again. I did of course have to do some quick swatches – I were too eager to contain myself any longer!

Pros

Sale Price
Everyone loves a good sale, and a reduction of 50% isn’t to be sniffed at, at all.. As NYX isn’t exactly a drugstore brand, £25 for the advent is rather exciting!

Overall Design
We’re all like magpies really, aren’t we? Whilst we aren’t all necessarily drawn towards sparkles we are still drawn towards things of which are aesthetically pleasing, personally I find this advent to be rather easy on the eye! It looks sleek and trendy, perfect to pull in a wide age range, teens and older!

Product Mix
What I really like about this item is that whilst it’s entirely made up of lip products, it’s been done in a way of which still offers a mix due to the inclusion of NYX’s many different product types, from lipsticks, liquid suede, glosses and butters. This is the perfect way to try out a variety of styles and colours etc.

Cons

Product Size
Considering the original RRP of £50 it would be nice to think that there would have been full sized products included in this, or that at least there would have been a door to open on Christmas Day which would have been full sized, however there’s 24 doors, all small sized.

Recommended Retail Price
Maybe it’s just me but I feel that the RRP of £50 is pricey, had I been considering getting this before the sales hit, it would have been a no go.

The Detail is in the Door
Okay so for an RRP of £50 you kind of expect that the little details would be taken care of, as such, the doors. For starters the doors are numbered in order 1-24 from top to bottom, left to right. Usually doors would be scattered on an advent, in order to make you search for the door corresponding to that day, this may be a small point but I feel that it takes away some of the fun. Also the colour of the product for that day is displayed on each door, too, taking away ALL elements of surprise, since the products are already listed on the back, also.

Product Quality
I have to say it, I’m being honest, I don’t feel the quality of some of the lip products is that fantastic. Sure, I have a feeling that I’ll be satisfied with some of them, though some of the types just don’t cut it for me, such as the butter glosses, unless using the intense ones there really isn’t much of a colour pay off, I feel this isn’t helped by the product consistency being rather thin. Considering one of my all time favourite brands is a drugstore brand, I know for a fact there’s cosmetics out there which will tick my boxes for a much smaller price tag.

Difficulty Opening
Another issue with the packaging itself is that the doors were actually rather hard to get open! I managed to hurt myself doing so even, which of course isn’t the best really, is it?

Rash!
This is one of those things of which will definitely prove to be each to their own, an individual thing, but I came out in a rash for a short period of time after swatching the products on my arm. It’s very rare, actually, extremely almost impossibly rare, that I ever come out with skin complaints from products of any kind, be that skincare or cosmetic, so to have gained a rash from swatching took me back a little. I have no known allergies, either, how very perplexing.

Overall, I do like this calendar, though I do feel that the original RRP is excessive and I know for a fact that I wouldn’t pay that for sample sized products, especially seeing as how they aren’t utterly outstanding. I do however look forward to using the products more and discovering my favourites.

  1. I have/had a surprising number of these lippies – at least eight! It’s a pretty good variety of products in terms of variety and formula, and while there’s definitely sticker shock for the full price, that works out to a little over £2 per shade, which seems reasonable for samples. Of course, that’s only if you like each product enough… I also can’t believe the laziness of the layout! Between the numbering, the unsurprising coloring, and the fact that all the products from one line were together, it’s like they didn’t even try.
And omg that rash! Do you at least know which batch of products it’s from?! I will sometimes get a reaction from a mix of products, for instance trying a new primer but my skin will only sting once I put on foundation.

    1. This is literally the first time I’ve ever used NYX! A store recently opened in my city though which makes it much easier to get my hands on the products. It’s alright when you think of it in that way, but knowing there’s drugstore brands with much smaller RRP’s and products that are actually better quality most of the time, it just doesn’t sit well with me, like you say, if I were happy with all of the products included then it would be fantastic, and especially the sale price – that one can’t be sniffed at… I just haven’t got on very well with many of the products in here.. I’ll use the brand again though probably, I’m liking the Lingerie ones, and I’m pretty sure those ones are safe for me! I’m not entirely sure which line gave me the rash but when I figure it out I’ll be sure to give you a heads up! My skin is normally like Teflon, nothing touches it! It really were such a shock. I agree, it is laziness, half of the fun is in hunting down the door numbers ha ha! What are your favourites?

      1. I feel like Nyx is that brand that makes a million products and sees what sticks… some of the products are good and some are weird. I find the Lingerie line, especially Soft-Spoken, super drying and feeling weird on the lips, and really wish that there were more neutral shades available in the Soft Matte Lip Cream and Liquid Suede lines instead of just that. I‘ve bought at least three SMLC that looked like good everyday pinks in the store but turned out way brighter than depicted on the tube (Sao Paolo was one of them). And I find the Lingerie line hard to buy in-store – there are a ton of undertones and depths, and everything looks so different in the black display than on the lips! Of all the lines here, I like the Liquid Suede the most. Stone Fox is such a fun color to play around with!

        1. Yep, totally agree with you! Sao Paulo is a LOT brighter than I expected it to be. It’s insane how different products can look in their little tubes and such as opposed to when they’re in use! I’ve a feeling I might like the liquid suedes too, I’m looking forward to finding out, the matte lipsticks are rather exciting also. I’d be ruined if I had to pick out a shade from the lingerie line, there really are SO many and yet they’re pretty much all nudes! It’s too much choice for someone like me, it takes me long enough if I have three options nevermind thirty or more! I’d be stuck there all month ha ha! I’ll likely find a favourite out of the ones included here then stick to it like glue. I really like the look of Stone Fox, I love unique colours like that!
